How it's made

Hi there! Let's set a cheerful little windmill turning today, in barn red and wheat.

The windmill is a cousin of the pinwheel. Each blade is split in two, so the sails seem to catch the light.

First, layer red on wheat and sew either side of the diagonal. Cut, press and snip the dog ears.

Now lay each one on a plain cream square, right sides together, and sew either side of the diagonal that crosses the seam.

Cut, press and trim to six and a half inches. Keep the two that spin the same way; the other two make a twin that turns the opposite way.

Make two more, then turn each one a quarter so the red blades meet in the middle. Sew two rows of two.

Look at them go! Sixteen windmills make a breezy farmhouse quilt.

About this quilt

The windmill block in barn red and wheat: a cousin of the pinwheel, with each blade split in two so the sails seem to catch the light. Four three-triangle units, 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished). This cut list makes two blocks, one spinning each way.

CUT • Red: two 7¼″ squares • Wheat: two 7¼″ squares • Cream: four 6⅞″ squares

MAKE • Layer each red square on a wheat one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal. Cut, press and trim the dog ears: four 6⅞″ triangle squares • Lay each on a cream 6⅞″ square, right sides together, and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal that crosses the seam • Cut on the line, press and trim to 6½″: eight units • Sort them into two piles: four spin one way and four the other • Turn four matching units a quarter each so the red triangles meet in the middle; sew two rows of two

TIP: the second pile makes a twin windmill that turns the other way. Set them side by side for a breezy pair.

OTHER SIZES: cut the red and wheat squares 1¼″ over the finished unit, and the cream ⅞″ over. For an 8″ block (4″ units): 5¼″ and 4⅞″, trimmed to 4½″.

Which way does your windmill spin?
