How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a clever little red fox today, pointy ears and all.
In winter, a red fox can hear a mouse under the snow, then leap up and pounce right on it.
Let's start with the ears. Lay a teal square on an orange one, sew across the diagonal, then cut right along the seam.
Press them open and trim to three and a half inches. Turn one so both ears point out, and sew teal between.
Next, the eyes. Two black squares go in an orange row, so they'll sit just above the cheeks.
Here's the clever part. Sew white cheeks either side of an orange strip, then big teal corners taper it to a point.
Tiny teal corners round off a black nose. Sew a teal strip on each side.
Now stack it all up: the ears, an orange forehead, the eyes, the muzzle and the nose. There's our fox!
A teal frame, sides first and then top and bottom, keeps the foxes apart in a quilt.
Nine foxes and a snowy border make a cosy little den for a winter nap.

About this quilt
A red fox face for winter, with pointed ears, white cheeks and a little black nose, pieced from squares and rectangles: no curves, no templates. 14½″ square unfinished (14″ finished).
CUT • Teal: one 4″ square, one 6½ × 3½″, two 5½″ squares, two 1″ squares, two 5½ × 1½″, two 1½ × 12½″, two 14½ × 1½″ • Orange: one 4″ square, one 12½ × 2″, three 3½ × 2″, one 4½ × 5½″ • White: two 4½ × 5½″ • Black: two 2″ squares, one 2½ × 1½″
MAKE • Ears: lay the teal 4″ square on the orange one, sew on the diagonal and cut along it; press open and trim both to 3½″. Turn one so the orange points up at both outer corners; sew teal 6½ × 3½″ between them • Eyes: orange 3½ × 2″, black 2″, orange 3½ × 2″, black 2″, orange 3½ × 2″ in a row • Muzzle: white 4½ × 5½″, orange 4½ × 5½″, white 4½ × 5½″; teal 5½″ squares on the two bottom corners • Nose: teal 1″ squares on the two bottom corners of the black 2½ × 1½″; teal 5½ × 1½″ each side • Face: ear row, orange 12½ × 2″ forehead, eye row, muzzle, nose row • Frame: teal 1½ × 12½″ sides, then 14½ × 1½″ top and bottom
TIP: trim the big teal corners on the muzzle to ¼″ and press them out toward the teal, so the white cheeks stay crisp.
OTHER SIZES: for a fox twice as big, cut every piece at twice its size less ½″ (a 2″ square becomes 3½″).
What would you name your fox? 🦊
