Tips for Using Fabric Calculators

• Design first: Complete your design before shopping
• Check before you buy: Backing and batting add 4 inches on each side, binding length adds 15 inches, and yardage rounds up to the next quarter yard. There is no universal 10% allowance, and the seam that joins backing panels is not added. Check seam allowance, shrinkage, directional prints, and cutting errors before you buy or cut.
• Buy binding last: Calculate after quilting (quilts can grow or shrink)
• Check fabric width: Ensure your fabric is standard 44" wide

Common Calculation Questions

How much extra should I buy?

Quiltler does not add a universal 10% for shrinkage or cutting errors. The estimate adds 4 inches on each side for backing and batting, adds 15 inches to the binding length, and rounds yardage up to the next quarter yard. It does not add the seam that joins backing panels. Treat the result as an estimate from the numbers you entered, and check seam allowance, shrinkage, directional prints, and cutting errors before you buy or cut.

What about directional fabrics?

Directional prints may need more cloth. The extra depends on print direction, repeat, and matching. There is no universal percentage.

Can I use fat quarters?

Calculators usually assume yardage. Fat quarters (18" x 22") work for smaller pieces - ask the app to show piece sizes.
