Plum Ohio Star

Plum Ohio Star is a throw of thirty Ohio Star blocks in a single Plum on Pale Lilac, set five across and six down edge to edge, finished at 71 × 83 inches. The Ohio Star is a nine-patch in which the four side units are quarter-square triangles, giving eight star points around a plain centre; with no sashing the star points of one block meet those of its neighbours, and the lilac corners form a lattice that runs the whole field. Two fabrics and one cut keep the surface crisp: 630 pieces, each block five squares and sixteen triangles, all Plum points on lilac. The construction rewards accuracy rather than speed. Cut the quarter-square triangles from squares as the pattern shows, sew them into hourglass units, and press the star points toward the plum so the lilac centre of each unit stays clean where four points meet. A Berry inner border and an Aubergine outer border close the composition. It suits a confident beginner who wants a traditional block with a clear, modern result and a lot of repeat practice at one unit, and it makes a composed bed topper for a throw-sized frame.
