Barn Red Dash

Barn Red Dash is a Churn Dash throw in Barn Red on Buttermilk, finished at 78 × 92 inches: thirty twelve-inch blocks set five across and six down with two-inch buttermilk sashing between them. The Churn Dash is a nine-patch with a plain centre, four corner units that are half square triangles and four side units that are a pair of rectangles, one red and one cream, so every block is seventeen pieces and the whole top is 510. Two fabrics do the work, and because every block is cut the same the cutting chart is short and the sewing is a rhythm you can keep for an evening. Make the corner triangles from paired squares, press toward the red, and sew the side rectangles in pairs before you lay the block out; the sashing between the blocks lets each dash stand on its own instead of merging with its neighbour. A Buttercup inner border adds the third primary and an ink-black outer border squares it up.
