Graphite Rails

Graphite Rails is a four-rail Rail Fence throw in Warm Ivory, Pewter, Graphite and Near-black, finished at 71 × 83 inches, thirty twelve-inch blocks set five across and six down with no sashing. Each block is four three-inch rails sewn side by side in the same value order, light to dark, and the blocks are turned a quarter turn alternately along each row so the rails run across in one block and down in the next. Where the two orientations meet, the dark rail of one block lands beside the light rail of the next, and the field reads as a continuous stepped zigzag from a distance. There are 120 pieces, all rectangles, which makes this the fastest of the Slate Interval quilts to cut and sew from strips. Keep the four fabrics in the same order in every block, press each seam toward the darker rail so the light rail stands proud, and the step will stay even across the top. A Pewter inner border and a Near-black outer border stop the zigzag cleanly at the edge. It suits a beginner with straight seams who wants a graphic, monochrome quilt without any points to match.
