About this pattern
Graphite Shadow is a Sunshine and Shadow throw in Warm Ivory, Pewter and Near-black, finished at 71 × 83 inches, with thirty twelve-inch blocks set five across and six down and no sashing between them. Each block is a five-by-five grid of squares arranged in concentric diagonal bands, ivory at the centre, pewter around it and near-black at the corners, and because the blocks are butted edge to edge the near-black corners of four neighbouring blocks meet as a dark diamond and the ivory centres sit between them like light falling across a grid. The whole field is 750 squares in three values, and the graphic effect depends entirely on each square being in the right place. The pattern sets the blocks out as numbered rows so you can chain-piece each row of five, press the seams in alternating directions row by row, and nest them when the rows join, which keeps the diagonal bands straight without any triangles. A Pewter inner border and a Near-black outer border square the top. It suits a confident beginner who wants a large, calm, optical quilt from nothing but squares, and who enjoys the order of a layout that must be kept. The download provides yardage for the three fabrics, a cutting chart, the block map with every square placed and a printable layout.
