Saltmarsh Flying Geese

Saltmarsh Flying Geese is a baby quilt of eighty half square triangles, eight across and ten down, each five inches finished. A two-inch sea-glass inner border and a three-inch harbour outer border bring the quilt to 50 by 60 inches. Each unit is half warm ivory and half deep water. Place odd columns with the deep water in the top-left; turn even columns until it sits in the top-right. Side by side, those two units form a flying goose pointing down the cot — four geese in each row, ten rows of them. Draw the diagonal on the ivory, stitch a scant quarter inch on each side of that line, then cut on the line. Press the deep-water triangle over and trim the unit to five and a half inches before it joins its neighbour. The join to watch is the goose point, where the two diagonals meet; keep that seam a true quarter inch so the row stays straight. One pieced unit and four solids make this a steady project for a cot, a travel bag or a play mat.
