About this pattern
Shingle Steps is a throw of seventy-two Half Square Triangles, each eight inches finished, set eight across and nine down. The quilt finishes at 75 by 83 inches. Columns step through the coastal range: ivory with tidepool at both sides, then tidepool with sea glass, sea glass with harbour, and harbour with deep water down the spine. Even rows stay at rotation 0; odd rows turn 180 degrees so the darker triangles form toothed steps toward the centre, like wet shingle. For each pairing, mark a diagonal on the lighter square, sew a quarter inch either side, cut apart, press toward the darker fabric and trim to eight and a half inches. Join units into columns in that value order, turning every other row. A two-inch tidepool inner border and a three-and-a-half-inch deep-water outer border close the throw. A maker already comfortable with half square triangles can keep one rhythm while the fabrics change. The download includes yardage for the five solids, a cutting chart for each pairing, piecing order and the column layout.
