Berry Amish Diamond

Twenty Amish Diamond blocks, each a fifteen-inch square, make up this throw: four across, five down, and three inches of Dusty Violet running between every block. The finished quilt measures 81 × 99 inches. Diamond in a Square is the older name for the same unit: a five-by-five of plain 3-inch squares in which thirteen Berry patches step into a diamond, the four points touching the middle of each side, while twelve Pale Lilac squares fill the corners. Because the sashing is wide, the berry diamonds stay as separate medallions and the dusty-violet channels become part of the drawing. Piece each block by sewing five rows of five, then joining the rows; keep the centre berry square true so the points land on the block edges. Press the berry seams inward so the lilac corners stay calm. Plum at two inches and Aubergine at four inches wrap the outside. Square piecing and a single repeated unit suit a beginner working up to a large throw, with plenty of chance to settle a straight seam.
