Clay Churn Dash

Clay Churn Dash is a lap quilt of Churn Dash blocks — the old Monkey Wrench — with clay side bars and clay-and-cream half-square triangles around a cream centre. Twenty ten-inch blocks stand four across and five down. Honey sashing at one and a half inches, a two-inch faded apricot inner border and a three-and-a-half-inch walnut outer border bring the top to 55.5 by 67 inches.

Cream fills the middle square and the inner half of each corner triangle, so the clay dashes sit in clear relief. Cut the four corner triangles from paired cream and clay squares. Join a clay rectangle to a cream rectangle for each side of the nine-patch, then sew three rows, matching triangle points to the rectangle ends. Press after each row; there are no Y-seams.

Honey sashing gives the clay a little breathing room. Apricot follows as a quieter band, and walnut is the last edge, dark enough for a sofa that sees daily use. The work suits a maker whose nine-patches already lie flat and who wants practice holding four matching triangles in a lap rather than a bed quilt.
