About this pattern

Hourglass Watch lays Quarter Square Triangle blocks — the traditional hourglass, also called Four Triangle Square — across a queen top in candlewax cream and aubergine. Eight blocks across and nine down, each ten inches, sit in two-inch lichen sashing, then a two-inch tarnished-gold inner border and a three-inch moss-shadow outer border. The quilt finishes at 104 by 116 inches. Each hourglass is four triangles meeting at the centre: two aubergine, two cream. Neighbouring blocks turn ninety degrees, so one cell stands as a vertical glass and the next as a bowtie, and the lichen channels keep those two readings from blending. Make the units from paired squares sewn on the diagonal, cut them apart, then join the halves, matching the four points in the middle; press toward the aubergine so the cream stays calm. This is a confident beginner project: generous ten-inch units, then straight sashing and two borders. It would live on a queen bed through the dark months, or stay folded in a blanket box until the first frost. The download includes yardage for these five colours, a cutting chart for the 104-by-116-inch layout, piecing order, and the block grid.
