About this pattern

St Patrick's Day Rails lays a queen-size St Patrick's Day field of Split Rail blocks in plum velvet and ribbon gold, divided by candle cream. Seven ten-inch blocks sit across and eight down, with two-inch cream sashing, a two-inch gold inner border and a three-and-a-half-inch plum outer. Finished size is 93 by 105 inches.

Each Split Rail is three equal strips — plum, gold, plum — joined along the long edges and squared to ten inches. Press into the gold so the plum rails stay wide. Set neighbouring blocks at right angles so the gold bars step from across to upright, and the plum reads as one dark weave behind the cream paths.

Cream is the grid; gold answers the centre stripe; plum is the St Patrick's Day frame. A sewist who keeps the three rails even will manage this queen. It belongs on a queen bed for St Patrick's Day, or over the piano bench while someone practises downstairs. The pack lists yardage for cream, gold and plum, cutting for the ten-inch Split Rail, strip-set order, and the 7-by-8 layout.
