About this pattern

St Patrick's Day Chequer is a Saint Patrick's Day throw built from Sixteen Patch blocks in candle cream, ribbon gold and plum velvet. Each block is a four-by-four checkerboard of two-inch squares. The throw is six blocks wide and eight high, each eight inches finished, with no sashing. A two-and-a-half-inch gold inner border and a three-and-a-half-inch plum outer border close the frame. Finished size is 60 by 76 inches.

Half the blocks pair cream with plum; the other half pair gold with plum. Set them in an even-odd rhythm so the plum squares meet across the seams and run as one dark lattice, while cream and gold step through the lights like coins on a dark cloth. Cut 2½-inch squares, sew four rows of four, press neighbouring rows in opposite directions, and nest the joins so each checkerboard stays square. Keep the two colourways in separate stacks as you assemble the rows.

This is for a sewist who likes orderly square piecing and a clear seasonal idea without novelty prints. It would live on a window seat through March, or over the backs of chairs at a parish breakfast. The download holds yardage for the three solids, cutting for both Sixteen Patch colourways, the row-by-row piecing order, and the 6-by-8 throw layout.
