Navy Pot Blooms

Navy Pot Blooms is a crib-to-cot quilt built from the traditional Flower Pot block: thirty eight-inch pots in a five-by-six garden bed. Each block sits a mustard-yellow floral bloom in a navy floral pot against a denser cream wildflower print, so the pots stay dark and the flowers stay warm. One-and-a-half-inch Bellflower Cream sashing separates the repeats, giving each pot a little air. A two-and-a-half-inch navy ditsy border holds the whole surface. Finished, the quilt measures 51 × 60½ inches — long enough for a cot mattress and still useful as a small throw on a chair.

The Flower Pot block is twenty-two pieces. The pot is a navy square with a cream triangle cut into its top, and the bloom is triangles and rectangles that meet at the centre. Matching the mustard print through the bloom is the part that rewards a slow iron; the pot itself is mostly straight seams. This is confident piecing — more shapes than a nine-patch, but the units are large enough at eight inches that the sewing stays pleasant rather than fiddly.
