Built from the Log Cabin quilt block.

About this pattern

Log Cabin blocks, seven across and eight down, sit edge to edge so the light and dark halves can run. Turn every other cabin a quarter turn and the buttercream logs meet, making a slow zigzag down the quilt. It sews up at 95 by 107 inches, covering a queen mattress and hanging a little at the sides.

Each twelve-inch cabin starts with a hearth square — deep berry on half the blocks, faded berry on the rest — then three rounds of logs. Buttercream builds the two light sides; quiet moss builds the two dark ones. Work around the square, adding one strip at a time. None of these seams run on the bias, so press after each log without stretching the edges.

A two-inch quiet-moss inner border sits next to the last logs. A three-and-a-half-inch dusty-rose outer border carries that rose out to the edge.

It suits a maker who likes sewing in strips and watching a block grow from the middle, and it is meant for a queen bed slept in every night. You get yardage, the cuts for both hearth colours and both borders, the order for sewing the logs, and a seven-by-eight diagram of which way each cabin faces.
