About this pattern
Ink Split Nines is a queen quilt of Split Nine Patch blocks. Each twelve-inch block is nine half-square triangles, three by three, frost against ink blue, so the dark triangles step from one corner toward the other. Seven blocks across and eight down sit in two-inch frost sashing. Every other block turns ninety degrees, reversing the stair so the field does not read as one long bolt. The quilt finishes at 109 by 123 inches.
Frost fills the light triangles and the sashing. Ink blue is the dark triangle and the four-inch outer border, with a two-and-a-half-inch periwinkle strip between sash and outer edge. Cut frost and ink into matching squares, sew the diagonal, and trim each half-square to four inches; join three rows of three with ink on the same corner of every unit. Press toward the dark triangle and nest the nine seams at the centres.
This layout suits a confident piecer covering a queen bed who wants high value contrast and a measured winter field. The download lists yardage for frost, periwinkle and ink blue, a cutting chart for the triangles, sashing and both borders, piecing order for the nine-unit block, and this seven-by-eight layout.
