Calculators

See how many pieces a fat quarter gives

The Fat quarters calculator tries your piece both ways on an 18 × 21″ fat quarter and gives the count, or how many fat quarters you need for a number of pieces.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Fat quarters. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the fat quarter calculator
On the Fat quarters calculator, typing a 5 by 5 inch piece shows how many fit on one fat quarter, then switching to Fat quarters for this many pieces and typing 40 gives 4 fat quarters, 12 pieces on each

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Fat quarters. It opens on 3½″ squares, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type the Piece width (inches) and Piece height (inches) you want to cut.
  3. Choose what to Work out: Pieces from one fat quarter or Fat quarters for this many pieces.
  4. For the second, type the Number of pieces.
  5. Read the card: the pieces from one fat quarter, or how many fat quarters to buy.

Good to know

  • A fat quarter isn't square, so a rectangle can fit more one way round. The card uses the way that fits more.
