Calculators

See how many pieces you can cut from your fabric

The Pieces calculator counts how many squares or rectangles fit on a piece of fabric, trying both ways round, or gives the yardage for the number you need.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Pieces. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the pieces calculator
On the Pieces calculator, changing the piece from 5 by 5 inches to 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches changes the count on a 42 by 36 inch yard from 56 to 224 pieces

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Pieces. It opens on 5″ squares on one yard, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Choose what to Work out: How many pieces fit on this fabric or Yardage for this many pieces.
  3. Type the Piece width (inches) and Piece height (inches), cut sizes with seam allowance.
  4. Type the Fabric length (inches), or the Number of pieces you need.
  5. Read the card: how many pieces fit, or the yardage and strips to cut.

Good to know

  • The count is how the pieces really nest in rows, not the fabric's area divided by the piece's, which over-counts.
  • For a fat quarter or a precut, use the Fat quarters or Precuts calculator.
