Yardage & patterns

See how much fabric your quilt needs

The Fabric Calculator reads your design and gives the yardage for every fabric, plus backing, binding and batting, with the pieces and cut sizes for each.

Where to find it

Designer → Fabric Calculator at the top, or My Library → Quilts → Fabric on the quilt's card.

Open your quilts
A Broken Dishes quilt on the design wall; Fabric Calculator opens its fabric calculator, 64 by 72 inches finished, with its totals, 6½ yards of piecing fabric, 4 yards of backing, ⅝ yard of binding and 72 by 80 inch batting, then the page moves down to the fabrics one by one: Cream 2½ yards, Navy ½ yard

How to do it

  1. Open the quilt in the designer and press Fabric Calculator in the top bar. It saves the quilt and opens its yardage.
  2. Read the four totals at the top: piecing fabric, backing, binding and batting.
  3. Below them, each fabric lists its yardage, how many pieces, and their finished and cut sizes.
  4. A fabric wider than 42″? Press its 42″ wide chip and choose 54″, 60″ or 108″. Only that fabric changes.
  5. Switch Measurements to show inches and yards, centimeters and meters, or both.

Good to know

  • The Backing line also gives the yardage of 108″ wide backing, which needs no seam.
  • Seam allowance, waste and binding method are in the calculator's settings if you work differently.
