Color a quilt from a photo

On a hexagon or other shape grid, Color from a picture fills every space with the color of the photo underneath, matched to a palette, so a photo becomes a quilt.

Where to find it

Designer → Overlays → Color from a picture (on a shape grid)

Open the designer
With a poinsettia photo over a hexagon grid, Color from a picture opens a dialog with a palette taken from the photo; Colorize fills every hexagon with the photo’s color there, and turning the overlay’s Show off leaves a red and green hexagon poinsettia

How to do it

  1. In Grid, set Grid shape to Hexagons or another shape. The button only shows on a shape grid.
  2. Put your photo over the quilt: Overlays → Add, pick it and press Add overlay.
  3. Press Color from a picture under the overlay. Match to A palette from the picture, with as many Colors as you like, or to My colors.
  4. Turn on Recolor filled spaces to recolor pieces you placed by hand too, then press Colorize.
  5. Turn the overlay’s Show off to see the quilt it made.

Good to know

  • Smaller shapes give more detail: set Side length in Quilt settings.
  • Fewer colors give a bolder quilt, made of real fabrics the pattern can count.
