Design on a hexagon, triangle or diamond grid

Change Grid shape from Square to Hexagons, 60° Triangles, Diamonds, Tumblers and more, and every space on the quilt takes that shape, ready to fill.

Where to find it

Designer → Grid (left panel) → Grid shape

Open the designer
On a blank quilt, Grid shape set to Hexagons redraws the grid as hexagons; with Place, clicking seven of them lays a rust hexagon flower

How to do it

  1. In the designer, open Grid in the left panel.
  2. Pick a shape from Grid shape. The grid redraws in that shape, starting from the quilt’s top-left corner.
  3. Choose Edges: Trim at the edge cuts the spaces off at the quilt’s edge, Whole pieces only keeps every shape whole.
  4. Choose Place in the tool dock and click a space to fill it with the color or fabric in your brush.
  5. To change the shape’s size, set Side length in Quilt settings. A 2″ hexagon has 2″ sides, the way EPP papers are sold.

Good to know

  • Sashing needs the square grid, so it’s off on a shape grid. Borders can frame a trimmed edge.
  • Put a photo over a shape grid and Color from a picture fills every space from it.
