Stagger rows with a half-drop layout

Set Layout to Half-drop rows and every other row of spaces slides over by half a block, like bricks, or to Half-drop columns to drop every other column.

Where to find it

Designer → Grid → Layout

Open the designer
On a blank quilt, Layout set to Half-drop rows slides every other row of spaces over by half a block; with Place, clicking spaces in three rows lays denim squares that stagger like bricks

How to do it

  1. Open Grid in the left panel.
  2. Pick Half-drop rows from Layout. Every other row of spaces moves over by half a block width.
  3. Or pick Half-drop columns: every other column of spaces drops by half a block height.
  4. Choose Place and fill the staggered spaces. Pick Rectangular to line the spaces up in plain rows and columns again.

Good to know

  • Choose the layout before you place pieces. Pieces already on the quilt stay where they are; only the spaces move.
  • Layout works on the square grid. A shape grid, like hexagons, sets its own layout.
  • Squares sashing needs the Rectangular layout, since staggered rows have no straight lanes.
