Design on the quilt

Cut pieces with the rotary cutter

Slice pieces on the quilt the way a ruler and cutter do on the mat: mark straight, circle, fan, curve or grid cuts, then Finalize makes them all at once.

Where to find it

Designer → tool dock → Rotary cutter, or press K.

Open the designer
The rotary cutter marks four diagonal cuts across four squares, Finalize cuts them all, and painting one half of each navy makes a pinwheel of half-square triangles

How to do it

  1. In the designer, choose Rotary cutter in the tool dock, or press K. The cut bar opens above the quilt.
  2. Pick a blade in the cut bar: Straight, Circle, Fan, Curve or Grid. Straight cuts snap to the quarter inch and to 45°.
  3. Choose how far a cut reaches: Across slices everything under it, One piece only the piece you start on, One cell stays inside one grid cell.
  4. Drag across the quilt to mark each cut. Marked cuts show as dashed lines, so you can mark several.
  5. Press Finalize in the cut bar to make every marked cut at once. Then color the new pieces one by one.

Good to know

  • Mark one diagonal across four squares, Finalize, then color one half of each: that's a pinwheel of half-square triangles.
  • Changed your mind before cutting? Clear (or Esc) removes the marked cuts. After Finalize, Undo puts the pieces back.
  • The same blades are in the Shape Designer, for cutting a shape you'll reuse.
