Start a quilt

Start an English paper piecing quilt

Start from a hexagon, diamond, triangle or tumbler quilt, such as Grandmother's Flower Garden or Tumbling Blocks, sized by the side of the papers you'll sew over, with a straight or shaped edge.

Where to find it

Design → What do you want to make? → English paper piecing

See the EPP quilts
On the English paper piecing shelf of the new-quilt setup, Grandmother's Flower Garden is picked; 2″ pieces make the hexagon flowers bigger and Shaped edges keep whole hexagons round the edge, then Start designing lays the quilt on the design wall

How to do it

  1. Open Design and choose English paper piecing on What do you want to make?
  2. Pick a quilt: Grandmother's Flower Garden, Hexagon Stars, Tumbling Blocks, Tumblers, Harlequin and more.
  3. Under Piece size, choose the side of each paper, from 1″ to 4″. Each size shows how many pieces the quilt takes.
  4. Under Edges, choose Straight to trim the edge pieces to a rectangle, or Shaped to keep whole pieces and no border.
  5. Press Start designing. The pieces are on the design wall, ready to recolor one by one.

Good to know

  • A piece size that would need too many papers for the quilt is grayed out. Pick a bigger piece or a smaller quilt.
  • Start from a photo, first on this shelf, turns a picture into pieces instead.
