Combine shapes into one

Select two or more shapes in the Shape Designer and Join them into one piece, Take away the top ones from the bottom, or keep only where they overlap. Line them up and space them evenly too.

Where to find it

Shape Designer → select shapes with ⌘ or Ctrl click → Join (M), or Shapes in the left panel

Open the Shape Designer
In the Shape Designer, a circle is clicked and a rectangle over its lower half ⌘-clicked, and Join makes them one arch-shaped piece

How to do it

  1. In the Shape Designer, click one shape, then hold ⌘ (or Ctrl) and click the others.
  2. Press Join at the top of the Shape panel, or press M, to make them one piece with their curves kept.
  3. For the other ways, use the buttons under Shapes in the left panel: Take away cuts the top shapes out of the bottom one, Keep the overlap keeps only where they cross, and Keep all but the overlap keeps the rest.
  4. With two or more selected, the arrow buttons there line up their edges, and Distribute ↔ or Distribute ↕ spaces three or more evenly.

Good to know

  • Take away leaves holes as holes, for a ring or a window.
  • Undo separates shapes you joined by mistake.
