Blocks & shapes

Draw your own shape in the Shape Designer

The Shape Designer draws a piece's outline, like a petal, a wedge or a tumbler, that you can give to any piece in a block or a quilt. Start from a ready-made shape or draw corners with Free form, curves with Pen or freehand with Draw.

Where to find it

My Library → Shapes → New shape, or Shape Designer on the studio home

Open the Shape Designer
In the Shape Designer, Free form places four corners of a tumbler on the grid, Enter closes the shape, and Sizes labels each edge with its finished length

How to do it

  1. Open My Library, go to Shapes and press New shape. The Shape Designer opens on an empty 12″ piece with a grid.
  2. Under Add shape, press Rectangle, Triangle or Circle, or pick one of the Starter shapes like Tumbler or Dresden blade.
  3. Or draw one: Free form places a corner at each click and Enter closes it; Pen (P) clicks corners and click-drags curves; Draw traces a freehand outline.
  4. Turn on mirroring (↔, ↕ or ✚) before you draw to get mirrored copies, and Sizes in the top bar to read each edge's finished length.
  5. Name it and press Save.

Good to know

  • Your shapes are in the quilt designer's palette under Shapes → Mine: pick one and click a piece to give it that shape.
  • Every starter drops in as an editable shape, so its points and edges can still be moved.
