Cut setting triangles for an on-point quilt

The Setting triangles calculator gives the side and corner triangles for blocks set on point: the squares to cut, how many, and the finished size of the quilt.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Setting triangles. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the setting triangle calculator
On the Setting triangles calculator, typing 8 inch blocks in 4 columns and 5 rows gives a 45 1/4 by 56 5/8 inch on-point quilt, with 4 squares at 12 5/8 inches for 14 side triangles and 2 squares at 6 5/8 inches for the 4 corners

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Setting triangles. It opens on 6″ blocks, three across and three down, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type your Finished block (inches).
  3. Type the Columns and Rows of blocks, counted along the edges of the quilt.
  4. Read the card: the size of the quilt on point, the Side squares to cut on both diagonals, and the Corner squares to cut once.

Good to know

  • Side squares are cut on both diagonals and corner squares on one, so the straight grain stays on the quilt's edge.
  • Sizes are rounded up to the next ⅛″. The sizes don't include sashing.
