Blocks & shapes

Design your own quilt block

The block builder is the designer at block size: an empty 12″ block on a drafting grid. Choose Place, pick a fabric and a shape, and click squares to piece it, then save it to use in any quilt.

Where to find it

My Library → Blocks → New block, or Block designer on the studio home

Open the block builder
In the block builder, a rust herringbone half-square triangle is turned over the drafting grid, and two clicks lay eight star points around a navy center, four at a time, making a star block

How to do it

  1. Open My Library, go to Blocks and press New block. An empty 12″ block opens on a 4 × 4 drafting grid.
  2. Choose Place in the tool bar under the block, then pick a color or fabric and a shape, like Half Square Triangle, from the palette on the right.
  3. Click a grid square to put the piece there. Press R to turn the next piece and H to flip it before you click.
  4. Give the block a name under Block in the left panel, and press Save. It's kept under My blocks.

Good to know

  • Mirror in the tool bar places copies as you click, like four star points at once with Turn 90°.
  • In the quilt designer, your saved blocks are in the palette's Blocks under Mine, ready to stamp onto a quilt.
