Calculators

Work out how much binding you need

The Binding calculator takes your quilt's width and length and gives the number of strips to cut and the fabric to buy for double-fold binding.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Binding. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the binding calculator
On the free Binding calculator, typing a quilt 90 inches wide and 108 inches long changes the card from 1/2 yard to 3/4 yard: 406 inches of binding, cut as 10 strips 2.5 inches wide

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Binding. It opens on a 60 × 72″ quilt, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type your quilt's size in Quilt width (inches) and Quilt length (inches).
  3. Change Strip width (inches) if you don't cut 2½″ strips, and Usable fabric width (inches) if your fabric isn't 42″ wide after trimming the selvages.
  4. Read the card: the yardage to buy, the Binding length, with joins, and how many Strips to cut.

Good to know

  • The binding length is the perimeter plus 10″ for the corners and the joins.
  • For a curved or scalloped edge, use the Bias binding calculator instead.
