Calculators

Work out how much backing to buy

The Backing calculator adds overhang on every side, then gives the backing size, how many widths of fabric to seam, and the yardage, for 42″ cotton or 108″ wide backing.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Backing. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the backing calculator
On the free Backing calculator, typing a quilt 90 inches wide and 108 inches long changes the card to 8 1/4 yards: a 98 by 116 inch backing, seamed from 3 widths across the length of the quilt

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Backing. It opens on a 60 × 72″ quilt, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type your quilt's size in Quilt width (inches) and Quilt length (inches).
  3. Leave Overhang each side (inches) at 4, or type what your longarm quilter asks for.
  4. Change Usable fabric width (inches) for wide backing: 108 for 108″ goods.
  5. Read the card: the yardage, the Backing size with overhang, and how many Panels to seam. It seams whichever way takes less fabric.

Good to know

  • 108″ wide backing usually needs no seam at all, and the answer says when one width covers it.
  • Just a little too narrow for one width? The Diagonal backing calculator may save fabric with a single diagonal seam.
