Calculators

Cut the squares for a nine patch

The Nine patch calculator gives the square size and the yardage for a classic two-fabric nine patch: five squares of one fabric and four of the other in each block.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Nine patch. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the nine patch calculator
On the free Nine patch calculator, typing a 6 inch finished block and 30 blocks changes the card from 3 1/2 inch squares to 2 1/2 inch squares, with the dark and light squares to cut and the yardage of each

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Nine patch. It opens on twenty 9″ blocks, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type your Finished block (inches) and How many blocks you need.
  3. Set Usable fabric width (inches) if your fabric isn't 42″ after the selvages.
  4. Read the card: the Square cut, then the dark and light squares and the yardage of each.

Good to know

  • Each square finishes at a third of the block and is cut ½″ larger, so a 9″ block takes 3½″ squares and a 6″ block takes 2½″.
