Lay out rings of curved wedges

Set Grid shape to Rings and a round quilt is cut into rings around the middle, each ring into wedges with a curved outer and inner edge, the way a patchwork tree skirt is pieced.

Where to find it

Designer → Grid (left panel) → Grid shape → Rings

Open the designer
Grid shape set to Rings turns a blank quilt into a circle of four rings of curved wedges; an 8 inch center hole opens, Stagger rings steps the seams, and wedges of the outer and second rings are painted rust

How to do it

  1. In the designer, open Grid in the left panel and set Grid shape to Rings. The quilt becomes round.
  2. Set how many Rings go round and how many Wedges each ring is cut into.
  3. Turn on Stagger rings to offset every other ring by half a wedge, so the seams step like bricks.
  4. Turn on Keep pieces square to give the outer rings more wedges, so pieces don't stretch toward the rim.
  5. In Quilt settings, set the Diameter, and a Center hole for a tree trunk. With no hole, Middle chooses pie slices or one circle.
  6. Choose Place in the tool dock and click a wedge to fill it.

Good to know

  • Every wedge in a ring is the same shape, so each ring prints as one template with its seam allowance.
  • Rotation under Grid turns where the seams start. Pieces you've placed move with their ring when you change the diameter, the hole or the number of rings.
