Size, grid & borders

Set the size of your quilt

Pick a standard bed size, or type the quilt’s width and height, the block size and how many columns and rows. Lock any number to hold it still while the others change.

Where to find it

Designer → Quilt settings (left panel) → Size, then the Across and Down cards

Open the designer
In Quilt settings, Size set to Queen bed makes a blank quilt 90 by 108 inches in 6-inch blocks; with Quilt width locked, typing 9 into Block width keeps it 90 inches wide in 10 columns of 9-inch blocks

How to do it

  1. In the designer, open Quilt settings at the top of the left panel.
  2. Pick a bed size from Size: Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin bed, Queen bed or King bed. It sets the quilt size and the block size together, so the grid divides evenly.
  3. For a size of your own, type into the Across card (Quilt width, Block width, Columns) and the Down card (Quilt height, Block height, Rows). The sum under each card shows how they add up.
  4. Press the lock beside a number to hold it still. Lock Quilt width, type a new Block width, and the number of columns changes instead of the quilt.
  5. Read Finished with borders under the cards for the size of the finished quilt.

Good to know

  • Size changes the quilt and its grid but leaves pieces you’ve already placed where they are. To take a finished design to another size, use Resize Quilt….
  • Typing Columns or Rows keeps the block size, so the quilt grows or shrinks to match.
  • On iPhone and iPad, you choose the quilt size and block size when you set up a new quilt.
