Make a round quilt or tree skirt
Set Shape to Round and the quilt is cut to a circle, with a hole in the middle if you want one. Lay it out in hexagons for English paper piecing, or in squares the circle trims.
How to do it
- In the designer, open Quilt settings in the left panel and set Shape to Round.
- Set Diameter to how far the finished quilt measures across.
- For a tree skirt, set Center hole to the opening for the trunk. Leave it at 0 for a table topper.
- Open Grid and pick a Grid shape. Hexagons start from one in the middle and ring outward.
- Choose Edges: Whole pieces only keeps every hexagon whole, the way English paper piecing is sewn; Trim at the edge lets the circle cut the pieces at the rim and around the hole.
- Choose Place in the tool dock and click a space to fill it.
Good to know
- Side length sets the hexagon size. The quilt keeps its diameter, so smaller hexagons fit more rings.
- Borders and sashing are straight strips, so they're off on a round quilt. Set Shape back to Rectangle to use them.
- For wedges that go round in rings, like a pieced tree skirt, set Grid shape to Rings.
