Paper piecing

Start a foundation paper piecing pattern

Open a paper piecing panel from new quilt setup: start from a ready-made block like a Mariner's compass, or a blank panel at the size you choose. Every patch is numbered in sewing order and split into sections as you go.

Where to find it

Designer → new quilt → Foundation paper piecing → Set up the panel

Start a paper piecing panel
Starting a new quilt, choosing Foundation paper piecing, then the Mariner's compass starter, which opens on the design wall numbered and in sections

How to do it

  1. Start a new quilt. On What do you want to make?, find the Foundation paper piecing card and press Set up the panel.
  2. Pick a starter to begin from (Flying geese strip, Spiky star, Mariner's compass or New York Beauty quarter), or leave them and type the Width and Height of a blank panel.
  3. The line under the preview counts the patches and sections the panel will have.
  4. Press Start from this for a starter, or Start drawing for a blank panel. It opens on the design wall with every patch numbered, like A1, A2, B1.

Good to know

  • A panel can be any rectangle: one block, a strip of geese or a whole quilt.
  • Every seam of a starter is yours to move, erase or draw over once it opens.
