Paper piecing

Draw paper piecing seams with symmetry

Turn on a symmetry and every seam you draw is copied: mirrored left to right, top to bottom, both ways, or turned ×4 or ×8 around the middle for stars and compasses.

Where to find it

Paper piecing panel → tool bar → the symmetry buttons on its left: One, ↔, ↕, ✣, ×4, ×8

Open paper piecing
Drawing two lines with eight-way symmetry turns a blank panel into a numbered block in eight sections, then it fills with navy, rust, cream and gold

How to do it

  1. With a panel open, look at the left end of the tool bar under it. One draws each seam once.
  2. Pick ↔ to mirror left to right, ↕ to mirror top to bottom, or ✣ for four copies, mirrored both ways.
  3. For stars and compasses pick ×4 (four copies a quarter turn apart) or ×8 (eight copies).
  4. Draw with Line as usual. Each seam lands with its copies, and the patches are numbered and sectioned together.

Good to know

  • ×4 and ×8 turn around the middle on a square panel. On an oblong panel, ×4 mirrors both ways instead.
  • Symmetry works with Shape too: drop one star and get its copies.
