Yardage & patterns
Change the seam allowance, fabric width and waste
The Fabric Calculator's Assumptions set how yardage is worked out: seam allowance, usable fabric width, extra for waste, overhang, binding method and pre-wash shrinkage. Change one and every number on the page follows.
How to do it
- Open the quilt's Fabric Calculator from the designer's top bar, or My Library → Quilts → Fabric on its card.
- Find Assumptions beside the list of fabrics. Every estimate on the page updates as you change it.
- Under Cutting, set your Seam allowance, the Usable fabric width of your fabric and a Waste allowance: 15% is recommended, 25% suits directional prints.
- Under Finishing, set the batting and backing overhang, the Binding method (Double fold, Single fold or Bias binding) and the strip width.
- Under Rounding, turn on Allow for pre-wash shrinkage if you prewash. Reset puts every assumption back.
Good to know
- Extra per fabric adds a flat length to each fabric on top of the percentage, for squaring up a cut edge or sewing a test block.
- Your assumptions are kept in this browser and used for every quilt, and the printable pattern's yardage follows them too.
- On iPhone and iPad, open Fabric Requirements, then the … menu → Settings.
