Design on the quilt

Copy and paste pieces

Copy a group of pieces and click them down anywhere on the quilt, or duplicate them in place. Paste under the design wall says whether a copy keeps its size or shrinks into one space.

Where to find it

Select the pieces → ⌘C, or right-click → Copy to place tool. Paste mode: tool dock → Paste.

Open the designer
In the designer, four squares of a navy and cream patch are selected and right-click → Copy selection to place tool picks them up; a click drops the copy at full size elsewhere on the quilt, and with Paste set to Into one space the next click shrinks the whole patch into a single square

How to do it

  1. Select the pieces you want to copy.
  2. Press ⌘C, or right-click them and choose Copy to place tool. The Place tool picks up the copy.
  3. Choose how copies land from Paste in the tool dock: Fit grid keeps the copied size and snaps it to the grid, Into one space shrinks or grows the whole copy into the one space under the pointer.
  4. Click the quilt to drop a copy, or drag to lay a run of them. ⌘V pastes the same way.
  5. Press Back to fabric on the bar, or Select, when you’re done.

Good to know

  • Duplicate on the bar (⌘D) puts a copy right on top of the original, still selected, ready to drag.
  • Copies land as loose pieces, so you can recolor or move any one of them afterwards.
  • Repeating a whole block often? Save it as a block from the right-click menu.
