Calculators

Cut the pieces for a square in a square

The Square in a square calculator gives the center square and the four corner squares to stitch and flip, for as many blocks as you need.

Where to find it

Studio top bar → Calculators → Square in a square. Also at quiltler.com → Calculators, and in the Calculators tab of the iPhone and iPad app.

Open the square in a square calculator
On the Square in a square calculator, typing an 8 inch block and 12 blocks gives 12 center squares at 8 1/2 inches and 48 corner squares at 4 1/2 inches

How to do it

  1. Press Calculators in the studio's top bar and choose Square in a square. It opens on one 6″ block, with the answer already in the You need card.
  2. Type your Finished block (inches).
  3. Type How many blocks you need.
  4. Read the card: the Center squares and Corner squares to cut, and the size to trim each block to.
  5. Sew a corner square to each corner of the center, corner to corner, so the seams meet in the middle, then flip and press.

Good to know

  • The corners here meet in the middle. For smaller corners that don't meet, use the Snowball calculator.
