Design on the quilt

Place pieces on your quilt

The Place tool puts down a piece of the fabric and shape you choose: click a space for one, or drag to lay a run. Pick the fabric and shape from the two chips under the design wall.

Where to find it

Designer → tool dock → Place, or press B.

Open the designer
In the designer, Place is picked in the tool dock, the Fabric chip is set to Navy and the Shape chip to Circle, two clicks drop navy circles on squares of the Plus Quilt, and a drag along a row lays a run of them

How to do it

  1. Choose Place in the tool dock, or press B. The bar under the design wall shows the Next piece.
  2. Press the Fabric chip and pick a color or fabric.
  3. Press the Shape chip and pick a shape, or No shape to fill the whole space.
  4. Click a space on the quilt to place one piece. Drag across the quilt to lay a run of them.
  5. Press Select (or V) when you’re done, so a stray click doesn’t place another.

Good to know

  • A piece with a shape stacks on top of what’s already there: place two opposite half-square triangles in one space to make an HST.
  • Picking a color in the right-hand palette with nothing selected loads it into Place too.
  • Press R to turn the next piece 90° before you click.
