Save a copy or a variation of your quilt

Try your quilt another way without losing it. Save as duplicate… makes a separate copy; Save as variation makes a linked copy you can swap between and compare side by side.

Where to find it

Designer → the ▾ beside Save → Save as variation or Save as duplicate…. Variations are also under Variations below the quilt’s name.

Open your quilts
A saved Sawtooth Stars quilt: Variations, then Save first variation starts Variation 2; its navy pieces are selected and turned berry, and Compare shows the navy original and the berry variation side by side

How to do it

  1. Open your quilt in the designer and press Variations under its name, then + Save first variation. Or open the ▾ beside Save and choose Save as variation.
  2. You carry on in the new variation. Change its colors, borders or size; the original stays as it was.
  3. Press Variations again to see them all. Click one to swap the design wall to it, or ✎ to rename it.
  4. Press Compare to see every variation side by side. The one with the colored border is the one you’re editing; click another to edit that instead, and Exit compare to go back.
  5. Want a separate quilt instead? Choose Save as duplicate…, name the copy and press Save duplicate. You carry on in the copy.

Good to know

  • Unsaved work is saved for you before the design wall swaps to another variation.
  • Each variation and each copy is a quilt in your library, so a free account needs a subscription to save one.
  • On iPhone and iPad, Save as New Copy is in the Save menu, and you can swipe through a quilt’s variations on its card.
