A worked answer
A 90 by 95 inch queen quilt has 370 inches of edge. Add 10 inches for the corners and the joins, cut 2 1/2 inch strips from 42 inch fabric, and you are buying three quarters of a yard.
That three-quarter yard is the rounded-up shop cut. The card is the same quilt, and it updates if your queen is a different size or your strips are narrower.

Not for standard 2 1/2 inch strips. Half a yard is 18 inches of fabric, which is seven strips and a bit, and this quilt needs ten strips. Three quarters of a yard covers it.
